Support for pregnancy loss

Experiencing a miscarriage is profoundly personal and can be both physically and emotionally painful. Whether this is your first loss or part of a longer fertility journey, please know that your grief is valid, and you are not alone. With deep compassion, this guide is here to offer you gentle support, meaningful tools, and evidence-informed options to help you heal—body, mind, and spirit.

Understanding Miscarriage

A miscarriage is the spontaneous loss of pregnancy before 20 weeks. It occurs in approximately 20% of known pregnancies, meaning that 1 in 4 people in their lifetime will experience a miscarriage, and even more may go undiagnosed. Most often, miscarriage is due to chromosomal abnormalities that are beyond anyone’s control. Nothing you did caused this.

Despite how common it is, the experience can feel isolating. People often grieve in silence, but healing doesn’t have to happen alone.

What You Might Be Feeling

It’s normal to feel a wide range of emotions, including:
– Sadness, guilt, or anger
– Numbness or shock
– Grief for what could have been
– Anxiety about the future
– Physical fatigue, hormonal changes, or discomfort

There is no “right” way to feel or recover. Give yourself permission to process in your own time.

Gentleness as Medicine

Your body and heart have been through a lot. We encourage you to embrace the following:

  • Rest and Nourishment

– Eat warm, nutrient-rich foods: soups, broths, cooked vegetables, and Foods That Build Blood.
– Stay hydrated.
– Sleep as much as your body needs.
– Limit stress where you can.

  • Compassionate Boundaries

– Say no to events or conversations that feel triggering.
– Lean on safe people who offer warmth, not advice.
– Know it’s okay to cry—or not cry at all.

Supportive Holistic Care

  • Acupuncture

Acupuncture offers both physical and emotional support after a miscarriage.
Benefits include:
– Regulating hormones and menstrual cycles
– Supporting uterine healing and blood flow
– Reducing anxiety, insomnia, and depression
– Creating space for grief and emotional release

  • Herbal and Supplement Support

– Herbal medicine, used under the guidance of a practitioner, may support recovery.
– Iron, B12, and folate help replenish blood loss and support mood.
– Magnesium and omega-3s help ease muscle tension and emotional overwhelm.
– Bach Remedies for Emotional Support After Loss

Emotional Healing Tools

  • Journaling Prompts

– “What do I need right now, in this moment?”
– “What would it look like to be gentle with myself today?”

  • Mindfulness & Grief Resources

– Gentle yoga or body scanning meditations
– Grief-focused support groups
– Fertility-specific counselors and therapists (ask us for local referrals)

  • Tracking Recovery

– Track your menstrual cycle, but try not to obsess over it.
– Allow at least one natural period before trying to conceive again (if/when you’re ready).
– Don’t rush—emotional readiness is just as important as physical.

When to Seek Further Help

Contact your healthcare provider if you experience:
– Heavy or prolonged bleeding
– Fever or signs of infection
– Lingering depression, hopelessness, or anxiety
– Difficulty functioning in daily life
