Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis
Many who suffer from hypothyroidism have Hashimoto’s disease or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, which is a common and sometimes chronic autoimmune disease that occurs when the thyroid is underactive. Regardless of whether your hypothyroidism has been diagnosed as Hashimoto’s or another autoimmune disorder, acupuncture is a component of Traditional Chinese Medicine that has proven to be effective in supporting disorders of the thyroid. For women who are trying to become pregnant, hypothyroidism can be particularly problematic as it can interfere with hormone balance critical to ovulation. This condition can also lead to a miscarriage or repeated pregnancy loss. With Hashimoto’s disease, the immune system attacks the thyroid which means it essentially turns against the tissues of the body. Unfortunately, many women have no idea they suffer from the disorder and may blame their health issues or infertility on other conditions. Some of the symptoms of hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s include:- Anxiety
- Fatigue
- Aching joints
- IBS or chronic constipation
- Heart palpitations
- Hair loss
- Elevated cholesterol levels
- Fertility issues
- Sensitivity to cold
- Dry skin and/or hair
- Irregular menstrual cycle, heavy periods
- Neck swelling (goiter)
- Inability to lose weight you have gained
- Puffy or pale face
How does acupuncture help those with Hashimoto’s disease and hypothyroidism?
Acupuncture provides many benefits to those who suffer from thyroid and autoimmune disorders. Not only does acupuncture help modulate the immune system, but it also promotes relaxation, balances hormones and reduces stress. Regular acupuncture treatments work to regulate the body’s physiology by supporting healthy digestion, regulating pituitary hormones, enhancing the autonomic nervous system, reducing inflammatory markers, promoting blood circulation and more. Autoimmune disorders such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis are believed to occur as a result of chronic systemic inflammation caused by a mix of factors such as poor gut health and diet, stress, genetic mutations, chronic infection, and environmental pollutants. Whether you are being treated with medication prescribed by a doctor or prefers to take a more holistic approach through nutrition, herbal medicine, and lifestyle changes, Sage Acupuncture should certainly be part of your healthcare team.Austin Chronicle Winner Best Acupuncture Clinic

I was recommended to Sage Acupuncture by my team at Texas Fertility Center… they not only helped increase my fertility, but worked on other related issues like my digestion and anxiety as well as periodic headaches and allergy symptoms. – Meg H.
Sage Acupuncture is simply wonderful! I’ve been a client for over two years, before, during and after pregnancy. – Shannon H.
These ladies are great– very knowledgeable, kind and gentle. I started a year ago to help with fertility, my progesterone was extremely low. Within a few months it was within normal range and I was pregnant. I then continued all throughout my pregnancy for maintenance and comfort.
