Pre-birth treatments towards the end of pregnancy gradually prepare the body for labor. This is the perfect time to reduce stress and enhance stamina for labor. Treatments focus on ripening the cervix and positioning the baby optimally for labor.
At Sage we find that the best results come when acupuncture is used as a pre-birth treatment, gradually preparing the body for labor starting at 36 weeks gestation (34 if the baby is not head down). Treatments are tailored to each individual woman’s constitution and pregnancy history, with a focus on gently supporting labor to unfold naturally.
An observational study (Betts and Lenox 2004) of 169 women who utilized pre-birth acupuncture before delivery found:
- 35% reduction in the number of inductions (for women having their first baby this was a 43% reduction) and a
- 31% reduction in the epidural rate
When pre-birth acupuncture was utilized before delivery with a midwife, there was a
- 32% reduction in emergency caesarean delivery and a
- 9% increase in normal vaginal births
