The reproductive years deserve more than a checklist

After over twenty years treating women through every stage of reproductive life – trying to conceive, navigating pregnancy and postpartum, and later moving through the long, uneven transition of peri/menopause – I’ve noticed the same complaint surface again and again. It doesn’t matter what decade a patient is in.

They feel processed rather than seen.

A fertility workup runs through a standard panel. If nothing gets flagged as abnormal, the visit ends with “everything looks normal, keep trying.” A perimenopausal patient describes eighteen months of disrupted sleep, mood swings, and cycles that no longer make sense. She walks out with a single prescription and a six-month follow-up. The clinic applies the protocol efficiently and briefly. It rarely asks what came before it – how she’s been sleeping for the past three years, what her stress load has been, whether anyone ever fully checked her thyroid, what her mother’s transition looked like.

That’s not a knock on the clinicians running these visits. It’s a structural problem. Conventional reproductive care often builds a standardized protocol around a ten-minute window. By definition, a standardized protocol isn’t built to ask what’s actually underneath a given person’s symptoms. Two patients can share the same diagnosis – the same “unexplained infertility,” the same “perimenopause” – and still have completely different underlying pictures. A cookie-cutter approach tends to treat them identically anyway.

I didn’t build Sage to replace that system. I built it after two decades of watching women fall through a gap. On one side sits “your labs are normal.” On the other sits “you clearly don’t feel normal.” That gap convinced me the better path uses both systems deliberately. Western medicine does some things better than anything else. A slower, pattern-based approach handles the parts a rushed visit has no time to address.

What “integrative reproductive care” means in practice, not just in theory

A lot of clinics use the word “integrative” as a marketing label. Here’s what it actually means at Sage, across fertility, pregnancy, postpartum, and the menopause transition:

We start with your full picture, not just the chart in front of us. Before we talk about acupuncture points or herbal formulas, we want your labs, your cycle history, your sleep, and your stress load. We also ask about family history that conventional intake forms often skip. A woman’s AMH or FSH number tells you something. It doesn’t explain why her cycle shortens every time work gets hard, or why her hot flashes worsen in a season of high stress. We’re trying to see the health underneath the number, not just the number itself.

Acupuncture never replaces medicine you need at Sage. If you need a reproductive endocrinologist, an OB, or a gynecologic specialist, we’ll tell you that directly and help you get there. Figuring out honestly which system fits what you’re experiencing is our job. That’s why we work alongside your care team. Our IVF and IUI support is built to complement your fertility clinic’s protocol, not compete with it.

Chinese medicine offers a body of knowledge that has held up over time, and we draw on the parts that do. This two-thousand-year-old system paid close attention to menstrual cycles, pregnancy, and postpartum recovery. It also tracked the transition out of the reproductive years, long before Western clinical research took female physiology seriously at all. Much of that pattern-based thinking still holds up against what we now understand about the nervous system and hormone regulation.

The wellness-industrial complex is not your friend

Here’s something we tell almost every new patient at their first visit: most of what actually improves your health is unglamorous, repeatable, and slightly boring.

Sleep. Food. Movement. Stress regulation. Consistency over months, not a twelve-day protocol.

That’s not a compelling Instagram caption, which is exactly why the wellness industry rarely leads with it. Selling a $450 hormone panel with a dramatic-sounding result is easy. Selling “go to bed at the same time every night for six months” is not.

I’ve watched patients turn their health into an unpaid second job – tracking, optimizing, supplementing. Many end up more anxious with no real improvement. Managing the protocol became more stressful than anything the protocol was doing for them. Wellness culture tends to run on a quiet, punishing logic: if a little effort helps, maximum effort must help more. If you’re still struggling, that logic says you simply haven’t tried hard enough.

That logic is false, and it causes real harm. Its opposite causes harm too – the fatalism that says your genetics and your age have already decided everything, so nothing is worth trying.

The truth, as usual, sits in the middle. Some things are genuinely within your control. Many things aren’t. A huge part of good clinical care – Eastern or Western – helps you tell the difference with some honesty.

What this means for you as a patient here

If you work with us at Sage, here’s what you can expect:

We’ll ask for your medical history and recent labs before we build a treatment plan, not instead of one. Something sits outside our scope sometimes, and when it does, we’ll say so clearly and refer you to someone whose scope it is. You’ll also get the reasoning behind a treatment, not just the treatment itself.

You won’t leave with thirty supplements that worked for “someone else.” We base every recommendation on your specific needs, informed by functional fertility testing rather than guesswork.

Twenty-plus years in, my strongest professional conviction stays simple: the best care rarely comes from choosing a side. Good care comes from looking at available resources. It means asking, case by case, what’s the best medicine for this situation, then building a genuinely integrative and sustainable support plan.
